In todays installment of Check Yourself:

1. If you are a white-appearing male-appearing straight-appearing person, please do not explain to me about how the only reason women are in the workforce is because our Evil Capitalist Overlords (tm) want to drive down wages and enforce the nuclear family.

If you replace Capitalist with Fascist/Democrat, that's actually the time when my mother turns off Fox News because fuck that shit. That shit is hard won. Being able to work means being able to own your independence and potentially have the ability to escape terribleness. And it's misogynistic asswipes who talk about "Oh if women weren't working, my pay would be better." Fuck you.

2. If you're going to lecture me on history, get your dates right. I know your brand of fucked up politics thinks that education is a statist conspiracy, but go fuck yourself.

3. This final one goes out several people. The American education system is not based on the "Prussian model," whatever that means. There's considerable European influence, but we have more French and English than German. Additionally, our system did not emerge fully formed like Athena from Zeus' head when the industrial revolution happened. (Additionally the Industrial Revolution isn't a one time event. It's a period and, in reference to the last point, generally accepted to be from 1750-1850.)

You know what in 1850? About half of American school children were being educated in schools. Not all of them were full time. Not all of them had the same curricula. I knew this in elementary school because I a) read American Girl and Laura Ingalls Wilder and b) because my grandmother, born in the twentieth century in New England, was educated in a one-room school house, didn't have shoes to wear to school, and of her family, only about two finished their education in a meaningful way.

But for the love of all that this holy, read the goddamned Wikipedia article on the history of education in America. (And reading it myself, the Prussian model might be the Mann reforms that say everyone deserves an education? I don't understand how this is a problem. Mann reforms did a lot of good. And separating by grade... makes sense for teachers? Have you ever tried to learn in a one room school house?)

"Oh if women weren't working, my pay would be better."

Wait WHAT? Someone said this?

Yeah. Here's the full quote:

late 19th and early 20th century industrialists were the people behind the suffragette movement and early efforts to get women into the workforce. it's the best thing to happen to them for two reasons:
1) they could considerably increase the size of the workforce, driving down wages, but increasing production.
2) with both parents working, and a societal shift toward a focus on the nuclear family starting around then, there was no choice but to put children into public schools (which were definitely funded by industrialists) so as to indoctrinate and forge the next generation of workers.

I am a long time fan of both American Girl and Mrs Ingalls.

Wiki, it's fine for quick information gathering but I balk at it. For anything worthwhile, given anyone can add or edit it. And Lord & Lady knows where they got said it.

I tend to use Wikipedia not for the direct info, but to look at the sources. If you get a Wikipedia article where the authors did a good job of citing their sources, it's possible to find those sources to both check them and see what else they say. I've actually used it this way when doing academic research and it worked for some things.

If and when the people have done their academic research isn't a problem. It's when people who post, don't. Or worse, people who quote Wiki as the only source of information. For papers, projects etc.

Hi- followed you here from ? several places I've seen you - transgender most recently.

IDK WtEff sort of malf we've been saddled with that forces Xenophobia to incarnate as a Chromosome Jihad so to speak.

Yet that's how I see it being applied. The Binary Gendering has been hijacked to divide us. Or is it a deeper crime? Education's often hijacked to imprint propaganda. Sadly all too real in history. Up to and including here&now's mundane reality checks. The keys to escaping such cages are in expanded knowledge. And that's not an idle rhetoric. Fact Check or Die. As in our MIND dying of poisoned lies. I wish I'd discovered that at a way younger age. My life might have sucked way less. You "get it" about the propaganda aspects:}
